Gain inspiration from Sara Norquay’s Portrait Exhibition displayed in the Printshop’s Jasper Avenue Window, and create your very own hand-carved and printed portrait during this weekend workshop. Artist, Sara Norquay will teach image transfer and carving techniques for a small portrait of the participants’ choosing. Choose from hand-carving your own self-portrait or a portrait of someone else and create a linoleum relief block with a strong graphic presence full of mark-making. You will learn how to ink up your block and print it on the Vandercook and Challenge Letterpresses. Participants should bring their chosen portrait with them (digital copy or physical copy) to turn into a print.

Over this 2-day workshop, participants will explore the Japanese resist dyeing technique known as, Arimatsu Shibori. Stitching, pleating, binding and pole wrapping are some of the techniques covered while participants create their own set of samples using a variety of cellulose fibres like, cotton, rayon and linen. Together participants will set up an easy, pre-reduced indigo kit while we explore its rich history and lore. In addition to the samples, each participant will work on a larger piece such as a scarf or wall hanging. No previous experience necessary! Please bring an apron and nitrile gloves, all other supplies are included.
