Indigo Dyeing and Silkscreen Resist Workshop

A 6,000-year-old process, indigo is one of the oldest known dyes. Due to its historic value within trading circles, indigo was coined the “blue gold”. This introductory weekend workshop focuses on an indigo vat dying process using an acrylic-based, silk-screen resist along with Japanese tie-dye known as Shibori. Visiting Artist, Tara Cooper will instruct students in this exciting textile printing process that she uses for her own studio practice and print work that will be exhibited in SNAP Gallery during January and February. Students will learn how to make their own indigo vats with a takeaway sample for home use. The workshop will also cover working with fabric, paper, patterns and drawing. No experience is necessary.

Introduction to Silkscreen Class

Learn this popular printmaking technique to create colourful and dynamic prints on paper. This 6-week class is your chance to learn how to transfer images onto screens, make stencils, layer colours, register multiple layers and print your final images. Students will create multi-layered colour images on paper while learning safe studio procedures from local designer and illustrator Andrew Benson. This course will prepare you with the skills necessary to create your own prints and to independently use the silkscreen facilities at SNAP.

*Please note this class is for creating screen prints onto paper and not onto fabric however, the skills taught during the class are transferrable to fabric printing.

Photo Lithography Class

This unique 6-week course instructs students how to develop and print with photo lithography plates, yielding incredibly diverse results. Lessons will kick off with an overview of the lithographic history and an introduction to digital processes using SNAP’s Digital Lab to prepare images for photo-litho plates. Informative demonstrations and hands-on instruction will focus on image preparation and will work through the process of printing images on both the Offset and Etching presses. Upon completion of the course, students will be capable of preparing and processing photo litho plates, as well as printing independently.

Hand Printed Books Workshop

Create a hand printed book at SNAP Printshop with local Designers Andrew Benson and Sergio Serrano. Screen print abstract shapes, patterns and imagery as backgrounds and typeset antique metal type and print it on the letterpress. Everyone will create their own page spread and unique letterpress cover and will learn bookbinding techniques to hand bind multiple pages together to create a collaborative artist book.

Wondering which print medium is for you? If all of the techniques sound exciting then this 5-week Print Sampler class is a great place to start. In this fast-paced class you will get a hands-on taste of: Intaglio, Lithography, Relief and Silkscreen. This class focuses on creating imagery through a variety of techniques and processes. Explore printmaking by screen printing stencils, rolling up litho plates, creating textured collagraph plates and capturing carved imagery in relief blocks. Each class will cover a different technique and give you an opportunity to try out the many exciting and diverse processes available at SNAP. Participants should bring a selection of found objects, textures and materials to work from.

Introduction to Letterpress Workshop

Join the growing legions of letterpress aficionados by learning the fundamentals of printing on SNAP’s Vandercook and Challenge cylinder proofing presses. Hone your upside-down typesetting skills as you hand-set antique metal type and create an accompanying linoleum block relief print. You will learn basics from start to finish including setting type, inking, locking up and pulling your own edition of one-colour prints. No prior experience required. Participants should bring a short written quotation to work with as well as an image that they wish to carve.

Learn one of the earliest and boldest printmaking techniques: Relief Printing. In this introductory 6-week course you will learn various techniques for carving a relief image into both linoleum and woodblock. Artist, Megan Stein will teach you how to mix and apply ink, register and print single & multiple colour reductive images using the printing press. This course will prepare you with the skills necessary to create your own prints and to independently use the presses at SNAP. Participants should bring a selection of drawings, images or photographs to work from.

Mixed Media Printmaking Class (Photo Transfers & Screen Printing)

Explore mixed media methods during this 3-week class by incorporating photo transfer techniques with silkscreen printing. You will learn how to transfer your photos onto wood by manually separating ink from paper and removing all of the paper fibres by hand. Artist, Caitlin Bodewitz will teach you her tips and tricks for achieving flawless photo transfers and how to integrate layers of design, shapes or text over top using handmade stencils and colourful screen inks. At the end of the class you will take home a series of 3 unique wood panel prints!

Drypoint, Relief & Engraving on Sintra Workshop

Learn about the various applications that Sintra plastic (PVC) can provide as a matrix for printmaking. With its relatively smooth surface, it is a very sensitive plastic and an inexpensive alternative to traditional copper plates or wood plates. During this weekend workshop Artist, Phoebe Todd Parrish will instruct you on how to create drypoint marks, engraved lines and carved relief imagery onto the Sintra matrix. You will learn the differences in inking the same plate to provide multiple effects and variations in the image. Enjoy the variety that this workshop has and its non-toxic qualities and endless possibilities.

Collagraph Class

Collagraph is derived from the Greek word “kolla” meaning to glue and “graph” meaning to draw. Collagraph is both a relief and intaglio process that is inexpensive and allows for versatile printing methods as well as room for exploration. During this 4-week class students will learn how to create a matrix from heavy paperboard and adhere flat objects and materials to create an intriguing image using additive methods and also incorporating reductive methods of cutting and removing parts of the matrix. Artist, Angela Snieder will instruct students on how to create both single plate prints and multi plate prints using intaglio and relief printing methods. This process is relatively inexpensive and low tech so it is ideal for both artists and educators who have access to an intaglio press. No experience is necessary, this class is recommended for both beginners and intermediate artists.

Silkscreen on Fabric Class

Learn to silkscreen your favourite graphics, words or patterns using vivid colours of ink onto any piece of fabric; t-shirts, pillowcases, tote bags, tea towels… anything you can imagine that is fabric! During this 4-week class, Artist Megan Stein will teach participants how to create one-of-a-kind hand printed fabrics using the silkscreen process. You will develop a basic understanding of the techniques and execution of silkscreen printing onto fabrics with water based inks. Participants will be supplied with their choice of one t-shirt, tea towel or tote bag but are encouraged to bring other light-coloured low-textured fabric items from home (pillowcases, scarves, shirts, etc.) A limited selection of other fabric items will also be available to purchase. Participants should bring a selection of drawings, designs or photographs to work from.

*Previous screen printing skills are recommended but not required.

Registration

Registration can occur on-line, over the phone or by dropping by SNAP during regular office hours. For further information on SNAP courses/workshops, registration and fees, please contact SNAP.

In order for classes to run, in most cases we need a minimum of 6 participants, so please register early and get your friends involved!

Cancelation Policy

Individuals who have registered for a class or workshop at SNAP but are unable to attend are required to give written (email) notice to SNAP 7 days in advance to receive a full refund. Registrants who cancel with 6 or less days notice will receive 50% of their registration fee. After the course has begun SNAP is unable to issue a refund or offer make-up classes for any days missed. Courses are run on a narrow cost recovery basis and are subject to a minimum enrolment in order to run. If SNAP cancels a course due to low enrolment, notice will be given at least 5 days in advance and a full refund will be issued.
