The Trapeze

In the SNAP exhibition ‘The Trapeze’, Edmonton artist Karen Dugas has focused on creating in her works narratives that explore the precarious balance between humanity and the natural environment.  The inclusion of text from T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets, provides direction and support in interpretation and “reading”.  With this body of new work Dugas is employing digital output in order to produce images of high resolution and visual complexity.

Karen Dugas’ work extends the legacy of Dada and Surrealism which continues to influence printmaking, which now freely combines photomechanical processes with direct mark making.  Dugas uses the structures of film and advertising to involve the viewer through the “easy” spectacle, the acrobatics of special effects.  The content of her work, however, is in line with most contemporary “Tableau” photographers. Dugas attempts to “picture” images which float like dreams but linger in consciousness as questions – even warnings.

The Current - artist's statement

"My work stems from personal experiences and observations in nature. I am inspired by the beauty and quiet present in the natural environment and am often lead to contemplate ideas of human transience. The Current includes some large-scale prints from a previous body of work combined with a new WaterShadow series, both of which explore ideas of internal reflection, and our relationship with nature. The exhibition shows a transition in my printwork as I experiment with using multiple plates and a wider, lighter colour pallet.

Much of my work begins with photographs taken during long walks outdoors. The WaterShadow series grew from photos taken of the textures, forms and shadows in the snow after a winter storm. Unlike traditional landscape photography, the prints have little relation to specific identifiable spaces or objects. The original subject matter is manipulated through cropping, and later, through layering in the printing process. The resulting prints consist of layers of transparent colour forming shapes reminiscent of flowing, breaking ice."
