Klusterfak

This August SNAP gallery is baring its walls to a collaborative community installation. Lead by four Edmonton Visual Artists: Sean Caulfield, Robert Harpin, Dara Humniski & Jill Stanton, the gallery will become an experimental ground for the intersection of multiple artistic practices. Klusterfak seeks to make connections between the work that happens in the studio and the presentation in the gallery, it also aims to investigate collaboration and make connections between artists, their work, and the community. Over the course of 5 weeks and supported by a series of artist demonstrations and drop-in sessions the gallery will transition from blank walls to 1000 square foot collaborative collage.

The gallery space is quite literally open for any artist or member of the community to add their mark to this evolving collaborative work. By responding to the works already installed or venturing off on their own anyone and everyone is invited to contribute to this evolving collaboration. SNAP encourages all forms of direct or indirect mark making on our walls and in our gallery space including (but not limited to): paste up prints, screen printing, paper collage, direct drawing or painting (acrylic only), video projection, photography, sound, light, paper cut & 3D forms. Staff support, studio access and some materials can be made available to support and develop your contribution to this exciting project.

In conjunction, SNAP will be programming 4 scheduled sessions during which the public is invited to drop in to the gallery and interact with the artists via demonstrations of their specific techniques. The first public demonstration will take place Saturday August 1st from 12pm-3pm with Sean Caulfield and will include an Installation & Demonstration.

Artist Biographies

Sean Caulfield

Sean Caulfield is a Centennial Professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta. He has exhibited his prints, drawings and artist’s books extensively throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Japan. Recent exhibitions include: Perceptions of Promise, Chelsea Art Museum, New York, USA/Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Alberta; The New World, The Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art, Debrecen, Hungary; Imagining Science, Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta.

Caulfield has received numerous grants and awards for his work including: Triennial Prize at the 2nd Bangkok Triennial International Print and Drawing Exhibition, Bangkok, Thailand; SSHRC Dissemination Grant: Canadian Stem Cell Network Impact Grant; SSHRC Fine Arts Creation Grant; Canada Council Travel Grant; and a Visual Arts Fellowship, Illinois Arts Council, Illinois, USA. Caulfield’s work is in various public and private collections including: Houghton Library, Harvard University, USA; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, England; Blanton Museum of Art, University of Texas, Austin, Texas, USA.

Robert Harpin

Robert Harpin graduated with a bachelor of fine art degree in drawing from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2006. Since then he has been heavily involved in Edmonton’s art community as a curator, administrator, and artist. Robert Harpin worked on the production team at the Works Art and Design Festival for three years, at Latitude 53 Contemporary Visual Culture, and curated The Apartment Show, a temporary exhibition of twelve Alberta artists in a near abandoned apartment building. Recently, Harpin curated Text Crutch at The Works Gallery at Jackson Power, participated in Gastrosophy and Transmutation, and was published in SNAP galleries quarterly newsletter SNAPline. Currently, Robert Harpin is a Public Art Project Officer at the Edmonton Arts Council.

Dara Humniski

Dara Humniski is a multi-instrumentalist with a diverse background encompassing fine art, industrial design and carpentry. Using the natural world as a starting point, Dara experiments with scale and media to assemble fictional worlds with open-ended narratives that express things about the human condition.

She completed a Bachelor of Design from the University of Alberta and is a founding member of the Loyal Loot Collective. MASS (2011) was her first major gallery installation, hand-painted on site in Manning Hall of the AGA. Her work is included in Edmonton’s Public Art Collection and Canadian Centre for Austrian and European Studies at the U of A. Dara has shown in solo/group shows since 2005.

Jill Stanton

Jill Stanton is a Canadian illustrator, muralist and comix-maker based in Edmonton, Alberta. She holds a BFA in printmaking and drawing from the University of Alberta. Her work specializes in the weird and wacky. She has been featured at the Art Gallery of Alberta, Applied Arts Magazine, and various publications. She is working on the next issue of a serial comic book based on dream imagery and hallucinations, entitled Headspaces. With her background in printmaking, she is currently working with the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts in Edmonton (an artist centre for adults with developmental disabilities) as Print Shop Coordinator.
