1 // Photo-etching
“You don’t take a photograph, you make it.” — Ansel Adams
Photo-etching combines the mechanical quality of the photograph with the richness and physical nature of etching. The first step evokes photography: applying a photosensitive emulsion to a copper plate and exposing and developing a positive transparency on it. Then the plate is either printed or etched further and then printed. Participants should bring a small selection of images to the first class, either photographs, drawings or text. No previous photography or etching experience is required. You will come away from the class with two 6”x9” plates and 4–6 prints and the ability to print photo-etchings independently at SNAP.
